Groundwater Quality: Nepal

ثبت نشده
چکیده

Nepal is a landlocked country in southern Asia, between China and India, with a total land area of 140,800 square kilometres. Topographic variations are extreme and the terrain has a general southward slope. The topography ranges from rugged high Himalaya in the north, to the central hill region, to the lower-lying Siwalik Range (south-central) and down to the ‘terai’ or flat river plain in the south. Elevations range from greater than 8000 m (Mount Everest range) on the north border with China (Tibet; Figure 1) to 70 m (Kanchan Kalan, terai region) in the south. Nepal has eight of the ten highest mountains in the world.

Characterization of microbial communities distributed in the groundwater pumped from deep tube wells in the Kathmandu Valley of Nepal.

Although groundwater is a major water supply source in the Kathmandu Valley of Nepal, it is known that the groundwater has significant microbial contamination exceeding the drinking water quality standard recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO), and that this has been implicated in causing a variety of diseases among people living in the valley. However, little is known about the dis...

Spatial Distribution and Seasonal Variation of Arsenic in Groundwater of the Kathmandu Valley, Nepal

A study was conducted in forty-one deep groundwater and twenty shallow groundwater wells of Kathmandu Valley, Nepal to assess arsenic contamination (shallow and deep groundwater) and spatial and seasonal variation in deep groundwater. The depths of the wells were ranged from 9 to 304 m. Groundwater samples were collected during pre monsoon and post monsoon in 2012. Atomic Absorption Spectromete...

Evaluation of groundwater environment of Kathmandu Valley

Kathmandu Valley aquifer in central Nepal is continuously under stress since the commencement of mechanized extraction of groundwater resources in early 1970s. Many wells have been drilled in shallow and deep aquifers of the valley; and numerous studies have been made in last four decades to understand the aquifers. However, up-to-date information on well inventory, water extraction, water qual...

Characterization of groundwater in the reference of arsenic and nitrate mobilization, Kathmandu Basin, Nepal

The groundwater is an important source of drinking water in the Kathmandu Valley, and is presently fulfilling about forty five percent of the total demand of water supply. However, the deteriorating groundwater quality is an emerging issue of concern. In this study attempt has been done to characterize the groundwater for the fate of arsenic and nitrate contaminations. Physico-chemical paramete...

Geological and geochemical examination of arsenic contamination in groundwater in the Holocene Terai Basin, Nepal

Arsenic contamination of groundwater is a problem worldwide, and the Terai Basin in the southern plains of Nepal is no exception. The Department of Water Supply and Sanitation of Nepal, with assistance from the World Health Organization (WHO), surveyed three districts of eastern Terai for the first time in 1999, and found that arsenic concentration exceeded the 10 ppb guideline recommended by W...
